Suggested Finishing Steps

The following information is designed as a starting point when finishing composite molds. Final grit selection may be changed to meet specific application requirements. Each procedure (competitive vs. Mirka) shows an abrasive sequence to achieve the desired finish. Note the reduced steps required using Mirka's Royal and Abralon abrasives. Abralon should be used with a water mist for lubrication. Remember to wipe the surface clean between steps to prevent contamination scratches.

Surface Repair*
Competitive: 220 grit abrasive, followed by 320 grit abrasive
Mirka: Royal 220 followed by Abralon 360

Mold Finishing
Competitive: 220, followed by 320 grit abrasive (dry); 400 grit abrasive (wet), 600 grit abrasive (wet) then Buff with compound
Mirka: Royal 220 followed by Abralon 360 and Abralon 1000

Scratch Removal
Competitive: 400, then 600 grit abrasive (wet); Buff with compound
Mirka: Abralon 1000, then Abralon 2000 and light Buff

*To finish seams or level repair areas, begin by using 80 grit abrasive, followed by 150 or 220.
